The U.S. trade deficit widened in December to its highest level since 2008. Last year's trade deficit saw a nine-year high of $566 million, according to data released by the Commerce Department.
Growing trade deficits with China are potential threats to U.S. national security, said Decker: "With whom are we building up the huge deficits? The record numbers, $566 billion (in 2017), almost $67 billion this year 66 percent of that is China's."
America's trade deficit with China serves the authoritarian state's global ascendance and regional power ambitions, said Decker.
"What are our dollars doing?" asked Decker. "We're building, paying for, and underwriting [China's] military buildup. We're building their infrastructure We're making their country stronger for the future, sort of at the long-term expense of our own. We're not making the investments in our own infrastructure."
"Every three years, we're at a rate of $1.2 trillion in trade deficit with China," said Decker. "That's money they're just using to build a deepwater fleet so they can project force in the Pacific. Its a national security issue, as well."

Stop selling out to China.
Never mind the 2 year budget deal just signed by Trump that will increase debt, hence more borrowing from China.
It’s been a year. What’s Trump waiting for to make the great trade deal with China?
Oh wait. Growth will cover the trillion dollar shortfalls o the budget he signed.
That was sarcasm.
There is a section of “American capitalists” who are completely sold to China.
They have done a tremendous disservice to America in the last generation.
Trump seemed to get that. Trump seemed to be poised to reverse that. Trump is the first guy in an entire generation, who has the potential to turn that around.
But there are a lot of very sold-out “capitalists”. Sold out to (communist) China.
A lot. A huge amount.
I don’t think Trump is sold out. But I think it is time for him to stand up for America.
It is time to rebuild our own manufacturing once again.
Even the caps that were put in place on spending some years back were lifted for this budget.
I dont know what he was thinking.
They work cheaper than the Philippinos. Don’t speak English. India would have been better.
you want Americans to pay more for their stuff ?
My wife bought a pet toy from china for the cat.

It broke in a ####ing day.
I told her that’s what you get.
Didn’t they kill a thousand dogs a few years back with the poison they send over?
