Amy Schumer is reportedly close to being cast as Barbie in the upcoming live action film based on a doll.
In a PG plot sure to set off empowerment alarms everywhere, the movie involves Schumers Barbie character being booted from the town of Barbieland for not meeting the towns standards. Barbie expands her horizons, enters the real world and various lessons about self-esteem and body image are learned.
Deadline describes it as a fish-out-of-water story reminiscent of films like Splash and Big, intended as a comedic twist on what people traditionally expect of Barbie. For the studio, Schumers polarizing brand of self-critical humor, seemed like the perfect atypical vehicle for the movies message of self-love:
Given her edgy stand-up comedy and her movie breakthrough writing and starring in the R-rated Trainwreck, what makes Schumer the right actress to play the embodiment of a beloved toyline that for years featured a doll with impossibly perfect physical proportions? Aside from the fact that she has Barbie hair, Schumers growing stature as a role model for female empowerment fits perfectly with how the film will exploit Barbies evolution into dolls of different sizes and shapes.
No word on whether Schumers Barbie will happily binge drink and get to have one-night stands. Sony Pictures and the movies producerswhich include former Sony chairman Amy Pascalalso expect to hire a female director for the project.
Production starts next spring, with a summer 2018 release. Whos playing Ken?
Please tell me this is satire?!
She’s got the ‘Imperfect’ part down cold!
With ‘Imperfect’ meaning; not at all the visual/ audio image you would first think of for that role.
fish out of water? That’s what that smell is.
She only has to know a couple of lines, like:
Math is hard.
Yeah, I guess she could pull it off.
Who. The. F***. is forcing her down our throats??? I’ve wondered this ever since she started appearing on RedEye. She’s not funny. She’s not clever. She’s not pretty. She’s a proud skank. Seriously, who is behind her?
Er, let me rephrase that last question ...
Ick - no.
she is the niece of an establishment politician us senator.
Hollyweird wants tax dollars.
[Given her edgy stand-up comedy and her movie breakthrough writing and starring in the R-rated Trainwreck]
“Positive” role model for a PG movie geared for little girls?
They were probably going to have a man play Barbie, but since most people think cross dressers are gross perverts, this is their compromise.
It’s a lose lots of money situation either way!
I wonder how many guys will get dragged in to see this movie?
There ought to be a law if a guy sees this movie they get castrated.
This is a movie who has a market limited to female Hillary voters. Great business plan.
Is someone running “The Producers” scam for real?
I wonder if Mattel thought to include a right to object to the cast in their licensing deal?
If they didn't, I bet they are regretting it now.
She’s more fit for the role of Little Lotta.
You owe me a new keyboard.
I was wondering similarly, what the heck demo does she appeal to that she’s in such “demand”?
“Who. The. F***. is forcing her down our throats???”
I’m kind of baffled myself. I usually love foul humor ... she’s not even good at that. She’s the opposite of funny. She’s also ridiculously predictable.
I watched her show twice when I heard some of the buzz about it and didn’t laugh once. It’s a bunch of Sara Silverman’s schtick reused by a proudly chunky chick for the most part. She has to have the goods on someone to keep getting shots in TV and film.
This movie has “moved to February for release” bomb written all over it :-).
