Norovirus and freezing temperatures causing havoc at Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang

The Winter Olympics has been hit by an outbreak of the norovirus, with 54 new cases confirmed in Pyeongchang.

It brings the total suffering with the highly contagious virus to 86 with dozens of security guards at the Games affected.

Many have been taken to hospital suffering severe diarrhoea and vomiting following the breakout on Sunday.

Consequently, 1,200 guards have been withdrawn from the Olympic sites and quarantined in their rooms with organisers forced to call in 900 soldiers as cover.

It’s the latest crisis to hit the Games, which officially gets under way with the opening ceremony on Friday.

Athletes are understandably concerned for their health, with British team bosses advising against attendance if due to compete within 48 hours of the three-hour ceremony.

I’m still having trouble with the idea that freezing temperatures would be a problem at the Winter Olympics. Illness makes sense, cold does not.

I agree. It was way colder in Lillehammer Norway, in 1994.

The point of the Winter Olympics is “freezing temperatures.”

Sort of like complaining at a swim meet that the pool is full of water.

In Rio the plumbing didn’t work, the pool turned green, many issues. As “useful” as most former Olympic venues have become, I imagine they just slap them together now. They only have to work for a month. Seems even that is a struggle. It is my understanding the athletes are too busy boinking one another to care. The norovirus thing could throw a wrench in that.

If it's too cold, even winter athletes will have problems. Doing cross country skiing in 20F with no wind is far better than doing in -20F with whipping wind.

You’d be surprised at the number of people who came to MN for the Superbowl and didn’t bring proper gear. Quite a shock getting off the plane to -7 F, and then the wind hits.

The opening ceremony is Friday. The ice skating starts tonight?

I know it is already Friday there, but showing events before the opening ceremony seems odd.

They may end up staying just long enough to finish their competition and get out ASAP. While staying, they could be essentially in lock-down to avoid infection. No fond memory to share later.:-)

Oh great. They will leave NK fast and spread that crap into every airline on the way home.

I wonder what other goodies that the NK cheerleaders have been infected with to spread around?

Not uncommon. Curling has already started. Not sure how many other events.

Yep — I feel bad for the skiers — watch out for brown snow!

I think that last time the pre-Games narrative was that the Winter Olympics were going to be cancelled because Russia had run out of snow, due to climate change.

That’s the most reasonable explanation so far.

Had the norovirus once several years ago. It was the one time I could have used stereo toilets.
