Athletes from all over the world are preparing for an extremely cold Winter Olympics in South Korea, likely the 2018 games will be the coldest in more than two decades.
Weather forecasters say the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang, which start Thursday, will easily be the coldest since the 1994 games in Lillehammer, Norway, which were the coldest on record. It got so cold on Saturday audience members walked out of opening ceremony rehearsals, USA Today reported.
Cold weather comes as some scientists and environmentalists claim that man-made global warming will make it harder to hold winter games in the future, pointing to the poor weather conditions during the 2014 games in Sochi, Russia. Cold weather by no means disproves global warming, however, its never convenient for those sounding the alarm.
A Yale University Climate Connections blog pointed to a recent study that claims climate change is increasingly threatening the viability of the Winter Olympics, held once every four years.
Even if the goals set by the Paris Agreement in 2015 are achieved, only 12 of the 21 cities would be suitable by the late 21st century, reads the Yale blog post.
Innsbruck, Oslo, Sarajevo, Squaw Valley, Vancouver, Chamonix, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Grenoble and Sochi all part of Winter Olympics history would no longer be on the list, the blog adds.

If the Young Un sets off a Nuke ,yep it will warm up pretty fast
I was at Osan for the winter of ‘85-’86 - the streets downtown were 6”-8” deep in ice for about a month....despite the constant traffic.
These are the Winter Games....right?
That’s good, because they’re having a bird-flu outbreak there so maybe this will freeze it out.
Next time, put the Winter Olympics in Singapore and this sort of thing won’t happen.
Umm sure. ruin it! Go glowbull warming climate range tc..
Sochi, for example, has a subtropical climate and palm trees. And Vancouver may be in Canada, but there isn't a single month of the year where the average overnight low temperature is below freezing.
I still say they should be permanently held in Switzerland.
Liberals now complain winter is too cold.
They have a screw loose. Climate change, my tuchis!
I spent two winters at Osan AB (Was there March ‘89 to March ‘91) It was frigid, but not much snow either winter. IIRC, the ‘90-’91 winter was the colder of the two. Lots of frigid wind, too.
And the Summer Games in Athens
Important notice: Winter is cold, it snows, the wind chills force thermometer downward, making temperatures feel even colder!
Dress for the weather, buck up and enjoy - winter or cancel games all together, though its hard to snow ski without snow and really, really hard to ice skate without ice and totally give up on sledding!
One can only hope.
These days the “climate scientists”, aka witchdoctors, call it “climate change”.
That way they are always correct no matter what the weather is or will be.
The first Olympics were not in Athens.
