Gilead Sciences, Inc. announced that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved once-daily oral emtricitabine 200 mg/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate 300 mg (Truvada) in combination with safe sex practices, to reduce the risk of sexually acquired HIV-1 in at-risk adolescents. (snip) The addition of the adolescent indication is backed by a single-arm, open-label clinical trial, ATN113, conducted in HIV-negative individuals 15–17 years old by the Adolescent Medicine Trials Network for HIV/Aids. A pro-life activist found herself the target of loud, accusatory chants by a group of pro-life protesters last week, who dubbed her a “racist” and “sexist” for not supporting a woman’s right to choose. Intersectional feminist club “The Women’s Collective” gathered at the University of Sydney Thursday, May 17, to protest a talk by Life Choice Australia director Rebecca Gosper titled, “Abortion: The Exploitation of Women,” The Daily Wire reported. Footage of the campus protest shows the band of feminists shouting chants and waving signs in an effort to make their message loud and clear outside the anti-abortion event. Some...

A drug-fueled sex fad called "chemsex" was linked to increased risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among men who have sex with men (MSM), researchers found. Gay, bisexual or other MSM who disclosed use of chemsex were more likely to be newly diagnosed with HIV infection, acute bacterial and rectal STIs, and hepatitis C, reported Mark Pakianathan, MBChB, of Wandsworth Integrated Sexual Health at The Courtyard Clinic in London, and colleagues.

In the United States, the percentage of adults identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender has increased to 4.5 percent, according to a year-long survey, which also shows that the biggest increase has been among millennials. Gallup's daily tracking in 2017 has found that more than 11 million adults now identify as LGBT in the country, which is 4.5 percent of the population — up from 4.1 percent in 2016 and 3.5 percent in 2012. The increase is driven primarily by the millennials, meaning those born between 1980 and 1999, as those from this group who identify as LGBT rose...
  • Hatboro extends discrimination protections to LGBTQ community

HATBORO >> The borough has joined a small but steadily growing list of municipalities across Pennsylvania that has done what the state government, so far, has been unable to do — extend discrimination protections to members of the LGBTQ community. In a 4-3 vote Monday night, borough council approved an ordinance making it unlawful in Hatboro to discriminate against a person in matters of employment, housing, commercial property acquisition and public accommodations on the basis of that person’s sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. The state’s Human Relations Act, however, does not extend protections to include actual or perceived...

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis' reported comments to a gay man that "God made you like this" have been embraced by the LGBT community as another sign of Francis' desire to make gay people feel welcomed and loved in the Catholic Church. Juan Carlos Cruz, the main whistleblower in Chile's clerical sex abuse and cover-up scandal, said Monday he spoke to Francis about his homosexuality during their recent meetings at the Vatican. The pope invited Cruz and other victims of a Chilean predator priest to discuss their cases last month. Cruz said he told Francis how Chile's bishops used...
  • Dolan: Pope’s Reported Remarks to Gay Man, While ‘Beautiful,’ Could Require Clarification

New York City, N.Y., May 22, 2018 / 08:30 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- The Archbishop of New York said Tuesday that while some recent comments about homosexuality attributed to Pope Francis are “orthodox teaching,” the pope's reported remarks could require clarification. Cardinal Timothy Dolan affirmed the pope’s recent affirmation of God’s love for a gay man with whom the pontiff visited in Rome, saying: “Jesus would have said that, and so would I. That’s conservative, traditional, Catholic, orthodox teaching. The ‘Catechism’ insists on that.” “While any sexual expression outside of a man and woman in marriage is contrary to God's purpose,...

Some LGBT advocates say those with same-sex attraction who use "avoidance techniques" are cheating.Martin Luther wrote, "If your head is made of butter, stay away from the fire." Sound advice for anyone seeking freedom from a bad habit or sinful temptation. To listen to gay supporters, one should be able to immerse themselves in all things homosexual and have the will power to abstain from sin.Are avoidance techniques true in the natural realm?Indeed they are. Someone might say the very term "avoidance techniques" sounds unbiblical.Fair skinned persons should avoid the noon day sun; that would include me. I burn easily.Persons allergic...

Valdez won 53.1% of the vote while her competitor, Andrew White, obtained 46.9%, according to unofficial election results. Valdez, a former US Army captain, accepted the nomination in a speech Tuesday evening, during which she advocated for equal opportunities for Texans. Reports that Pope Francis told a sex-abuse victim that God made him gay have drawn headlines this week, with many observers inferring a new level of acceptance of homosexuality, which the catechism of the Catholic Church describes as “objectively disordered.” The Vatican spokesman declined to confirm or deny the statement, citing a policy of not commenting on the pope’s private conversations. But no aspect of Pope Francis’ five-year reign has been better known or more controversial than his conciliatory approach to gay people, most famously expressed in his 2013 words about gay priests: “Who am I to judge?”

Hillary Clinton had a choice between endorsing incumbent Gov. Mario Cuomo (D-NY) or his upstart rival for the Democrat nomination, Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon, who would not only be the first woman governor of the Empire State, but the first gay governor. Hillary chose the old white guy. It was former Secretary of State Madeline Albright who famously said in support of Hillary Clinton during the 2016 campaign, “It’s not done, and you have to help. Hillary Clinton will always be there for you. And just remember, there’s a special place in hell for women who don’t...

The nascent New York gubernatorial bid of Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon hit a rough start in the polls. I wondered initially if she was going to attempt to campaign in the more conservative haunts of upstate and how she might fare that far from her usual digs in Manhattan. This week Nixon set out to answer that question, making campaign stops in Syracuse and Rochester. In the latter appearance, she had a message for New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. Apparently, he’s not done enough to protect illegal aliens from the long arm of the law and if...

Cynthia Nixon's answer to a question that has perplexed New Yorkers for generations is turning heads on social media. Nixon, the Sex and the City actor challenging Gov. Andrew Cuomo, was asked by The New York Times Magazine where she believes upstate New York begins, a query that regularly sparks fierce debate — and a wide-ranging array of responses — on Twitter and Facebook. Her answer? Somewhere near Ithaca. "I don't think the Hudson Valley is upstate," Nixon said, according to the Times. "Once you get to Ithaca, by around there, you're starting to get upstate."

New York has a major opportunity to lead the nation in reducing emissions and to strike a blow against inequality by making significant and bold investments in public transit across the state. Transportation is now the top climate culprit in New York state, responsible for more greenhouse-gas emissions than power plants. While our state is ramping up investments in renewable energy, moving people cleanly and efficiently is absolutely critical too. We must address this need by expanding public transit in ways that will also create family-sustaining employment options, improved public health, safety and mobility. The climate crisis and the transportation...

The leader of the New York arm of the Black Lives Matter movement is calling out New York gubernatorial candidate and actress/activist Cynthia Nixon for her comments on legalizing marijuana over the weekend, in which she said that the industry could provide a form of “reparations” for communities of color. While he supports cannabis legalization, Black Lives Matter of Greater New York president Hawk Newsome told the Times Union on Monday that candidates for office should not use words like “reparations” lightly, a topic on which there is a growing body of serious scholarship. “Cynthia Nixon’s comments that the legalization...

HIV, the fastest mutating organism, now poses the threat of a second drug-resistant epidemic. On 1 December 2011, President Obama declared that we now have the tools for an 'AIDS-free generation'. Made just over 30 years after HIV was discovered, this declaration was a stunning turnaround in the fight against HIV and AIDS. The world had come together to fight a scourge that had killed over 30 million people and transformed it into a manageable, chronic illness. Persons infected with HIV were now referred to as “people living with HIV (PLHIV),” highlighting that HIV is not only a survivable disease...

Caitlyn Jenner lashed out at President Trump in a recent interview, claiming that the president “has been, for all LGBT issues, the worst president we have ever had.” The former Olympian and reality television star was an outspoken supporter of Trump in 2016. However, in a profile published with Broadly on Tuesday, Jenner claimed that she might not support the president in 2020. “I want him to know politically I am disappointed, obviously,” Jenner said of Trump’s policies regarding LGBT issues. “I don’t want our community to go backwards. Just leave us alone, that’s all we want. Then maybe later...
